The Real Lady Gaga Stood Up

Last night Lady Gaga tore the house down at the halftime show for Super Bowl LI. It was awesome. She jumped off a huge tower, flew around the stadium, and rocked some killer dance moves. Her entourage was on fire and she even had someone playing a circular guitar. To be honest, aside from a couple important commercials, the performance was my favorite part of the whole event. Not because they were my favorite songs, they weren’t, or because she’s my favorite singer, she isn’t, but because she was real.
So often performers are encouraged to not actually sing live, but rather lip sync over the recording so as to not sound out of breath and be able to focus on the performance aspect of the show. What's more, society encourages performers, especially women, to only wear the scandalous sexy outfits if you look like a Victoria’s Secret model, not like an actual human with skin and fat and muscle. Lady Gaga went against all of this, but did so with class and strength, and became an icon for girls everywhere.
Last night, Lady Gaga shamelessly performed in an awesome silver two piece that showed off the muscles in her legs and abs. She didn’t have the perfectly flat stomach that sits (impossibly) stoically no matter what, but rather looked (better than) the normal woman. And what frustrates me the most is that she was shamed for it. People made more rude comments about the way she looked and what her stomach did than about her amazing singing talent or the important topics she sang about. But it didn’t matter, because she crushed it, and not only did she look awesome, but she was able to sing while rocking all over the stage. I don’t know about you, but I can hardly walk up a set of stairs while having a conversation, let alone hip hop dance around a stage while still singing in tune.

What’s more, Lady Gaga has always been an advocate for inclusion, and last night was no different. She took a stand for what she believes in, and despite how you personally feel about these current events, you can admit that it was brave of her to do so. This world needs more people willing to stand up for what they believe, and I feel that celebrities owe it to their fans to be a voice in the world.
Last night, Lady Gaga became someone that I admire, and she took a stand for underrepresented people all over the world. I’m proud to be a Little Monster.
